An article pointed out seven things about remanufactured cartridges that people get wrong.

TG Daily reported that whilst people want good deals on printer toner, some avoid remanufactured cartridges because they think that they are “bad for [the] printer”, but that this is just a myth, and there are several more that are noted and dispelled.

Firstly reputable remanufacturers do not “drill and fill” – they rebuild the cartridge, replacing worn components like image rollers and chips, clean the cartridge and after testing it resell the cartridge. Buying from established retailers who only deal with trustworthy remanufacturers is a good start, it added, or checking the reviews on the company’s website before buying.

Secondly, the article noted that remanufactured toner is not inferior to the original, as it has the same chemical composition and the same print quality as OEM cartridges. The third misconception is that the old toner in the cartridges is reused which is, the article said, “nonsense” because as the toner is used “small amounts of paper particles, dust and other substances, as well as a gradual build-up of electrical charge, gets into it”, making it unusable, and each individual manufacturer’s toner formulation is different.

The article also condemned the notion that using remanufactured toner cartridges damages printers, and pointed out that “these cartridges are very neat and make very little contact with the insides of the printer”, and that they are “no more likely to damage the internal workings of a printer than new ones”, while escaped toner is catered for as part of printer maintenance.

Recycling of cartridges is a requirement of OEMs these days, and most are broken down and reused, but remanufacturers collect and recover more empties than anyone else, and the end result is that the OEM cartridge will cost more. The sixth most-voiced concern was that remanufactured cartridges are just not as good as original ones, but although this may once have been true – the article claimed – years of experience have seen this change, so that it is no longer true, and most report no difference between the two except for the price.

Lastly, the article said that using remanufactured cartridges would not void the printer guarantee, and that now both “the EU and fair trade bodies in the US” have taken action to stop this practice from OEMs, as most problems with printers are caused by human error and not the cartridge at all.
