The UK remanufacturer has asked customers “are you ready for the new WEEE Directive”.
With the new regulations coming in at the start of January this year, all remanufactured inkjet and toner cartridges “will be classed as EEE”, or electronic and electrical equipment, and DCI/Jet Tec stated the new directive “has been impending for some time, and yet still seems to be an elusive subject” among industry companies. Anyone producing EEE “will need to be compliant”, and the company is classed as a producer, and is responsible from collection to disposal.
This also includes treatment and recovery of EEE, and DCI/Jet Tec added that it is “fully compliant” and registered to a producer compliance scheme (PSC). As there has been “a lot of information circulating that has perhaps brought with it confusion about compliance”, the remanufacturer has sought to “reassure all of their customers, and clarify what their obligations actually are”. As part of the PSC scheme, it also has a registration number, which customers can request to be sent.
The remanufacturer also mentioned “obligations” of any customers or distributors, whose only requirement “as part of the new directive is to offer their customers”, or end-users, a take-back scheme”. Customers therefore have been “encouraged to implement a recycling scheme if they do not already have this in place”, as well as ensuring “that they provide their customers with the information about where and how they can recycle” their cartridges.
DCI/Jet Tec goes on to add that “if you are a customer that imports EEE products, you will have the same obligations as a producer, and have to finance the collection and treatment of WEEE waste as well as offering a take-back scheme”. It emphasised that if any customers “still have any questions or concerns about what is being asked of them”, they should contact their account manager or get in touch through www.dci.co.uk or www.jettec.com.
Sean Hill, Environmental Manager for DCI/Jet Tec, commented: “We understand that the new regulations may seem daunting, and that was a need for clarification around what our customers should be doing from 2016. Although the new directive is to be introduced in the New Year, there will be some flexibility with everyone becoming compliant as the Environmental Agency do understand that getting to grips with the transition may take time.”
